Drama of such high quality is a rare occurrence, and one to cherish. Edmund White's script is as close to inch perfect as you could wish for - buzzing with intelligence and power and complemented with two wonderful performances and excellent direction from George Perrin. Peter Eyre, as the sensitive and manipulative writer John, is mesmerising, and Arthur Darvill, clearly an actor with a bright future, excels in his major stage debut as the mass-murderer interviewee Harrison. Their electric chemistry builds like storm, with a strong undercurrent of sexual tension, and, when it explodes, the audience is treated to a joyous theatrical experience. Strong characters, great acting, simple design, intelligent writing and consummate direction make this classic theatre in every sense.
