August 2006

This fictionalisation of an encounter between Gore Vidal and the right wing terrorist bomber Timothy McVeigh amounts to a profound questioning of both mass violence and our capacity to project our own ideological, sexual and social preoccupations upon it. In it, the caged and soon to be executed prisoner exchanges ideas with the patrician writer. There are reflections on the sexualities of both, but also a cautionary note in the text about the form of voyeurism that inevitably plays a role in such encounters. White’s text is ultimately ambivalent about its subject matter, yet socially critical of its American context. Director George Perrin shows a sure grasp of the material and brings splendid performances from Peter Eyre and Arthur Darvill.

Hit List - Pick of the Week
"Telling the tale of an encounter between writer Gore Vidal and mass murderer Timothy McVeigh, this is a strongly performed and intelligently critical piece of drama"
